Everyone knows how important it is to get enough sleep.

Being well-rested is key to being happy, healthy, and productive. So what do you do if you can't seem to get that rested feeling, despite making an effort to get the hours in? It might not be your fault. There are two types of ongoing fatigue: Adrenal Fatigue and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Both will make you feel perpetually tired and run down, no matter how much sleep you get. So how do you know if you have either of these conditions, and what can you do to fix them?

Stress and fatigue are closely linked, and chronic fatigue and adrenal fatigue are thought to originate in the adrenal glands.

These small glands control adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormone), forming our biological responses to threats. Today's busy and stressful lifestyles, unfortunately, often cause the overproduction of cortisol on a daily basis in response to stressful stimuli and overtax the adrenal glands constantly, until the glands no longer respond quickly, resulting in fatigue and the inability to become excited, in some cases. When this occurs, symptoms of chronic adrenal fatigue begin to emerge and make everyday activities a constant struggle. This is what we also call HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis imbalance.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are often very similar to those of other illnesses, which can make diagnosis a challenge.

The major symptom, of course, is ongoing and constant fatigue, even after a long sleep.
