About Barricaid:

Developed by Intrinsic Therapeutics in Massachusetts, Barricaid is an FDA approved device designed to effectively close large annular defects in the discs of the lower spinal column. Traditionally, patients with a healthy disc who had a large hole in the outer ring of the disc (annulus) posed a dilemma for surgeons: Remove the interior nucleus to avoid its re-herniation through the remaining hole, or maintain the natural disc material with the known increased probability of extrusion through the annulus. With Barricaid, surgeons can avoid the necessity of undertaking aggressive discectomies in cases where patients have a significant risk of recurrent herniation. Before Barricaid, the only surgical option for patients with larger defects involved aggressive removal of the remaining nucleus. Though effective against reherniation, this technique carried with it additional disc collapse risk, which worsened clinical outcomes in the long run. Barricaid provides a way of providing limited nucleotomy and secure closure for patients with large defects, which preserves a larger amount of the patient’s natural disc material. Just as importantly, Barricaid significantly decreases the risk of recurrent disc herniation, complications, and repeat surgeries. Having gone through two full years of FDA screening and research, Barricaid’s effectiveness has been demonstrated for closing large defects in the annulus and reducing the incidence of complications that result in further surgery. As published in The Spine Journal, definitive results show superior outcomes for patients who have undergone surgery using the Barricaid device, as opposed to those only undergoing discectomy.
