IRS Expands List of Preventive Care Benefits to Include Asthma Care
On July 17, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released guidance ( Notice 2019-45 ) which expands the list of preventive care benefits that health savings account (HSA) insurance products may provide with first dollar coverage (i.e., exempt from the deductible). Previously, the IRS stated that preventive care generally does not include any service or benefit intended to treat an existing illness, injury, or condition. However, this expanded list of services benefits patients with asthma because the IRS notice specifically expands preventive care for inhaled corticosteroids and peak flow meters for individuals diagnosed with asthma.
