200 Hr - Art of Teaching Yoga

With Yoga East Staff. Next held on Sat, Sep 17, 2016 at 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm. This enrollment runs from Sat Aug 6, 2016 - Sat Dec 3, 2016. This 8 class series is required for Yoga East Certification and counts for 20 hours in the subject of Teaching Methodology. This is a series of 8 classes in which you will find your own teaching voice, learn creative teaching, learn how to maintain commitment and develop as a teacher and practitioner. Find inspiration in your own heart, life experiences and personal practice. Each class includes a discussion of a theme and how it relates to our life, practice and teaching. Our asana "engineering" clinic breaks down the asanas into important alignment elements, practice and teaching points using props, and showing how to modify postures without props for all levels of students. Each class provides practical teaching experience with helpful critique and discussion. This class is for teacher trainees enrolled on our teacher training course, or for students with at least two years of yoga experience. Register with Laura Spaulding.

200 Hr - Foundations of a Mature Yoga Practice

This series of 16 classes is required for Yoga East certification and counts for 20 hours in the subject of Techniques. The series of classes is intended to improve your yoga practice. We will methodically work on the most important yoga postures and pranayama exercises. A yoga teacher should have a strong practice with good alignment and form. We will help you improve your technique in important postures and help you bump your practice up to the next level. You will learn correct alignment, breathing, pronunciation of the names, and tips for good practice and teaching. Open to all students. Register with Susan Reid.

Letting Go Yoga Nidra

This is yogic sleep, entering a profound state of relaxation in which you are able to descend into the deepest levels of consciousness and unlock your inner strengths. Change negative habits and thoughts into positive, life-affirming behaviors and transform your life. Tap into your own creative potential and discover how to meet life's challenges with enthusiasm and courage. Yoga Nidra holds the key. This class is our annual class, held near Halloween each year, on the theme of Death - the Final Definitive Journey. Many past participants have found this yoga nidra to be a powerful and life-changing spiritual experience. This class is a one-hour guided relaxation. No yoga experience is needed. The class begins with a soothing series of easy yoga postures that prepare the body for deep relaxation. We recommend you bring an ordinary bed pillow and a blanket or something warm to cover with during relaxation. Ware loose or stretchy clothes appropriate for yoga practice.

200 Hr - Yoga Anatomy: How Yoga Works

This series of 16 classes is required for Yoga East Certification and counts for 20 hours in the subject of Anatomy and Physiology. Learn human anatomy as it pertains to the practice of yoga and pranayama. Learn why postures are difficult, how stretching works, why yoga builds strength, and how some yoga postures can be dangerous and even deadly if done incorrectly. Understanding the anatomy of a posture can make it easier and better. Each class works with particular groups of postures like forward bends, backbends, twists and inversions. Each class covers anatomy and physiology; injuries and physical limitations commonly encountered in the posture and ways of working with those challenges; the anatomy of the subtle body including the chakra system, nadis (channels of the subtle body) and koshas (subtle sheaths). The class is open to all levels of students who are interested in improving their practice. No particular experience or ability is required. Text: Anatomy Coloring Book, Kapit & Elson, 4th ed. Yoga Sutras - Chapters 1-2

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were composed approximately 2400 years ago and brilliantly and succinctly summarize the yoga system in a text of 196 aphorisms (sutras). Patanjali's work has been the subject of numerous scholarly commentaries. Although it fell into obscurity for several centuries it was resurrected by Western Sanskrit scholars in the 19th century. Today it is widely studied as one of the earliest and most authoritative texts of yoga. Study of the Yoga Sutras is recommended in both the Ashtanga and Iyengar systems. This class will chant, read and discuss the meaning of the Sutras and how they are relevant and helpful for one's own yoga practice. No previous knowledge of the Yoga Sutras is needed for the class. Enrollment is free and open to all Yoga East students. Series of 16 classes: 20 YA 300/500 YPLE Hours.
