The Winemaker by Richard G. Peterson
Just published, "The Winemaker" by Richard Peterson is a definite Must read for any wine aficionado. I am honored to be selected by Richard to offer his book ($29.95) to my clientele. This is his autobiography, mostly about his career as he pioneered winemaking in California. He graduated from Berkeley on the GI bill with his PhD in Agricultural Chemistry in 1958 (Richard always likes to remind me that my Uncle was one of his favorite professors and sat on his PhD committee), and was immediately hired by Gallo (The University of Gallo!) to become a winemaker in the Research Production Dept. He spent 10 years there becoming the head winemaker, before being handpicked by Andre Tcheliftcheff to replace him as the winemaker at Beaulieu in Rutherford. In 1974 Richard moved to the Monterey area to become winemaker and President of the huge The Monterey Vineyard project. There he details the many pit falls in beginning a new winery, and shares his trials and tribulations! Please scroll down for more information!

A day does not go by when I am asked about the next release of Black Slate. For those of you new to the store, Black Slate is the show stopper red wine value from Priorat; a small, remote, dry, arid, mountaineous region south of Barcelona where ancient terraced vineyards of Garnacha and Cariñena were rediscovered in the mid 1980's, and then nurtured back to health after nearly a century of neglect.

2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon "Hillside Select", Stags Leap District, Napa Valley
"In contrast to the more linear, structured, but massive 2001, the 2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is pure fruit-bomb material, but stunningly proportioned, beautifully pure, with notes of melted chocolate, blackcurrant jam, sweet black cherries, licorice, camphor and charcoal. Very full-bodied, like the 2001, but much more lavishly fruited, it is more accessible and hedonistically, as well as intellectually, satisfying. If the 2001 is the long-distance runner, this comes across more like a middle-distancer. It had performed fabulously well since it was released by the winery, and even though it's still an adolescent in terms of its evolution, this wine is a head-turner in wine tastings, and a spectacular effort from Napa. Drink now or drink in 20-25 years." - 100 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate (Dec 2014).
