  Thousands of individuals connected with nonprofits through the Pittsburgh Cares opportunity calendar last year. Partnering with Pittsburgh Cares allows your organization to engage more individuals, expand service output, and have greater impact on the populations you serve.We welcome all local nonprofits to become Priority Partners, but we do have a few criteria. Your organization must:

  • Have verifiable 501(c)3 nonprofit status or be a not-for-profit/public school or government organization

  • Prohibit discrimination in hiring practices or in determining recipients of services based on

    an individual's race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, or mental or physical disability or any other status prohibited by applicable law

  • Agree to not use volunteers for activities related to political campaigns or religious proselytization

• HandsOn Tech

  • As a partnership between AmeriCorps, Google and the HandsOn Network

    HandsOn Tech Pittsburgh has promoted sustainable and effective technology use within the city's nonprofit community. Started in 2011, this program was intended to be a three-year effort, and like all good things, it must come to an end on August 22, 2014.

  • We would like to thank our nonprofit partners for supporting our work for the past three years, and we hope that our legacy will continue for many years to come.

  • In 2011, Pittsburgh Cares partnered with Points of Light, HandsOn Network and Google to be part of a new program to help nonprofits increase capacity through the use of technology.

    The mission of HandsOn Tech is to develop the nonprofit sector's effective use of technology to increase community resources and improve outcomes for low-income communities and families. As one of the first seven cities, AmeriCorps VISTAs based in our office worked with over 400 Pittsburgh-area nonprofits to fulfill this mission.

  • HandsOn Tech expands upon Pittsburgh Cares' focus on volunteerism by matching talented skills-based volunteers with local nonprofits.

    These SBVs assist with technical assessments, provide free training on a variety of technologies, and help to implement technology solutions.

  • Now in its second year, HandsOn Tech has expanded to eight cities and continues its mission of helping local nonprofits better fulfill their mission.

    The Wishlist is another way you can do good year-round and help enhance the impact of Pittsburgh Cares' community partners.

  We understand that purchasing and storing large quantities of tools for occasional or intermittently occurring projects does not often make sense, and we hope the Pittsburgh Cares Tool Shed can make a huge difference for local nonprofits. The Pittsburgh Cares Tool Shed is a resource of our Priority Partners package of services. The Tool Shed is an initiative to provide an inventory of tools to local nonprofit organizations. Litter creates a sense of neglect, reducing property values and inviting property vandalism. Residents and businesses have the power to prevent and eliminate BOTH illegal dumping and litter.

The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter serves more than 1.6 million individuals in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties. Locally, the Red Cross provides relief to the victims of more than 350 disasters each year, facilitates more than 2,600 emergency messages between our deployed men and women in uniform and their loved ones here at home, as well as trains more than 50,000 individuals in lifesaving skills. The American Red Cross is not a government agency and it relies on the generosity of the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania to fulfill its mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and other lifesaving emergencies.

ASSET currently serves 161 school districts, charter and private schools impacting 4,500 teachers and more than 180,000 students across 52 Pennsylvania counties. Established in 1994 by Bayer Corporation and several community partners, ASSET also received substantial funding from the National Science Foundation. Today ASSET has achieved sustainability as a fee-for-service organization with ongoing support from several local and national foundations and corporate partners. Since 2006-07, Governor Edward G. Rendell and the PA Legislature have invested $38MM to allow ASSET to partner with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to improve elementary science education through designing and coordinating the landmark initiative Science: It's Elementary.

CSCF is the sole provider of community based programs for children with SCD in Western Pennsylvania. Some of the programs offered by CSCF are the Family, Educational Support, Learn2Swim and Living Well with Sickle Cell Transition Programs. The strength of CSCF is in our collaborative partnerships. Among the 22 organizations that have partnerships with CSCF are Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Sickle Cell Program, The Children's Institute and Greater Pittsburgh YMCA Allegheny. Though there is promising research, there is NO CURE for sickle cell disease. We help children and support families while we wait for a cure.

We use a database-driven web site that can immediately print a comprehensive record about volunteers and how many hours they've worked. This is a useful tool for keeping track of community service or teacher-required volunteer hours.

We aim to reach out and care for children in the age range of pre-K through high school. The after-school program is geared towards kindergarten through sixth grade. The summer camp registers children pre-K through grade 8. The girls and guys in middle school groups are set up around children in the 6th to 9th grades. The boys' high school basketball team reaches out to youth aged 7th grade through 12th grade. In a nutshell, our goals are to: Meet a person's needs at their level of development and assist them in achieving personal growth. Ensure the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social components of our holistic models are appropriately incorporated into each of our programs. Network or partner with other organizations that will advance the accomplishments of our mission while avoiding unncessary duplication of services. Maintain the highest standards of financial integrity and stewardship while pursuing diversified sources of income. To implement and advance the 40 Developmental Assets outlined by the Search Institute as being necessary for adolescents to make healthy choieces and avoid risky behaviors as they approach adulthood.

Founded in 1990, we were the first Girls Hope established in the U.S. and a model for developing other Girls Hope programs across the nation. We provide two stable, family-like homes, each accommodating eight full-time residents, while also serving as a home base for several Girls Hope college students.   • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh ReStore

The store accepts donated goods which are sold at 30%-50% of the retail value. All proceeds from the sale of donations help place families in affordable shelter in the Greater Pittsburgh area. The ReStore provides an environmentally and socially responsible way to keep good, reusable materials out of the waste stream while providing funding for Habitat's community improvement work.

Mission "People working together providing opportunities that will empower families and individuals to discover, acknowledge and develop their maximum potential physically, spiritually and economically." History Once a thriving borough east of Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg has absorbed more than its fair share of social and economic dislocation since it was established in 1887. The decline of the steel industry in the 1980s hit the town especially hard and, in 1987, Wilkinsburg was declared a distressed community. In 1987, the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Social Work was commissioned by the Wilkinsburg Borough to conduct a community needs assessment. This study concluded that a one-stop human service center would greatly enhance the delivery of service in the Borough. The idea was to offer, all under one roof, the spectrum of essential human services not currently available to much of Wilkinsburg. Due to its strong emerging role in the community, the Covenant Church of Pittsburgh was selected to assume the leadership in developing a plan to open a community center to meet the needs of the Wilkinsburg residents. After a careful review of the University of Pittsburgh study, Covenant Church took a leadership role in forming Hosanna House, Inc., a separate 501 (c) 3 organization which was incorporated in 1989. Leon E. Haynes, III, the first and current Executive Director, was identified to lead the community building process that would initiate new programs and partnerships, and facilitate development of the one-stop shop. Mr. Haynes brought together government, social service, business, community, school and religious leaders to undertake the creation of this community center. In the early 1990's Hosanna House was able to purchase the abandoned former Horner Middle School which is centrally located in the heart of the community. Over the next several years more than 500 volunteers gave of their time helping to renovate the building for use. In 1996 we officially opened our doors as Hosanna House - Community Center of Western Pennsylvania! Today Hosanna House is a multi-purpose community center which serves over 27,000 people a year. We impact youth, families and individuals with quality health and human services. We provide a variety of services and programs that include: early childhood education, youth recreation, tutoring and mentoring, youth and adult technology, men's services, workforce development, health and dental care and permanent supportive housing. All of the services that we provide have been initiated as a response to the needs of the community.

It fulfills this mission in four ways: - Serving as a collaborative leader by promoting and supporting a network of providers within and outside the walls of its multi-purpose center. - Serving as a bridge between human service organizations and those who develop policies and funding that impact the quality of life in the Mon Valley area. - Monitoring community needs and initiating innovative strategies to fill service gaps. - Providing essential services to both community members and human service organizations. The Human Services Center was created in 1982 under an initiative of the Allegheny County Commissioners. As a private, non profit 501c3 organization, the Center is owned and operated by the Human Services Center Corporation (HSCC). Currently, over 750 people receive services daily.

  • In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh

    http://www.oyhs.org. In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (formerly IVC) is a part of the Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) initiative of the United Way of Allegheny County. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood. Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling through an online program which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to an appointment, friendly visiting, helping with simple yard work, special events and more! In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) partners with local religious congregations, universities, community groups, families and individual volunteers. Investors and developers are approaching Lawrenceville with proposed projects and plans, and houses are selling and renting faster than in previous years, despite the challenging economic times. Despite the organizational and community success, there is still much to be done in Lawrenceville. Dilapidated and vacant buildings, large tracts of vacant underutilized land, struggling main street businesses, potential plans waiting for implementation, a myriad of quality of life issues and standard of life issues are constant reminders that organizations such as Lawrenceville United are crucial to the continued success and revitalization of the community.

• Current On-going Customized Programs, Include

  YES has made exemplary progress during the 12-13 program year: engaging 3,321 youth in service, completing 13,809 hours of service, engaging over 297 youth and adults in leadership and service learning workshops and professional development opportunities, awarding 13 mini-grants for youth-led service projects, and providing 71 DIY service kits to requesting schools and OST programs.

  • Young Leaders Academy

    Provides high school students with opportunities for their voices to be heard, time to explore and challenge their potential, and the resources to create change. Students participate in various leadership development workshops and volunteer projects focusing on several different social issues. Curriculum design and support relating to leadership, service, and awareness is a compliment of the program. (4 years of implementation).

  • Leadership through Service in Our City (9th Grade Nation Partnership)

    Trains high school student leaders and civics teachers across 10 high schools in the service learning process, provides support and consultation services, and produces a Civics & Service Learning Newsletter highlighting programs, tools, resources, and grant opportunities. (5 years of implementation).

  • SVP Pittsburgh Kids

    Creates awareness among elementary aged youth of the responsibilities and rewards of giving both time and money to non-profit organizations. The child-parent team model creates positive experiences for families and also create a platform for conversation at home, beyond the confines of the program. (5 years of implementation).

  • Service Remix (Summer Dreamers Academy)

    Empowers elementary and middle school students to add service to the activities that they enjoy! This program puts a fun mix on service while providing engaging activities that are age appropriate. (4 years of implementation).

• Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

  Pittsburgh Cares' Youth Advisory Council is a leadership development program comprised of a core group of diverse, talented, and civic-minded youth that are committed to creating positive social change in their schools and community.The YAC develops and implements YES key initiatives while serving as youth ambassadors, acting as the voice for youth in the community, and inspiring others to do the same. Youth Benefits:

• Family Volunteer Days

  • Family Volunteer Days give Pittsburgh families the opportunity to volunteer side-by-side with other caring families to better the 'burgh!

  • Join us for National Family Volunteer Day on Saturday, November 23rd at the Lincoln Park Community Center.

  • Join us for Joy Makers

    Winter Family Volunteer Day on Tuesday, December 3rd at Guardian Self Storage Unit on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. We will be hosting a wrapping party for parent-child teams to get into the holiday spirit by decorating holiday cards, making holiday crafts, and wrapping 100 toys that will be donated to children in need.

  • Pittsburgh Cares requests a donation of $5 per volunteer to be a part of Family Volunteer Days.

    Funds not only provide necessary supplies, materials, and tools for the event, but also ensure that the work Pittsburgh Cares does in neighborhoods throughout the city can continue beyond Family Volunteer Days. All donations are tax deductible.

• Customized Programming

  The Youth Engaged in Service customized programs of Pittsburgh Cares will provide an opportunity for youth voices to be heard, time to explore and challenge their potential, and the resources to create change... these are the elements that make the Youth Engaged in Service (YES) customized programming an experience to remember. The YES team customizes project opportunities and days of service throughout Allegheny County in partnership with schools and youth organizations.   • The YES PD Series is for

    educators, youth workers, out-of-school time providers, parents, volunteers, and community based organizations to implement service, service-learning and philanthropy education in their community. The workshops aim to equip its participants with the tools that they need to plan, implement, and evaluate service learning with youth.

  • A number of training options and styles are offered to meet your needs, from easy to register off-site seasonal workshops to on-your-site workshops tailored to your needs and brought straight to you.

    If you would like to bring the workshop to your school or organization, group discount rates are given.

  • The PD Series provides participants with an opportunity to learn, connect, and be inspired through a wide range of exciting sessions, informative panels, and hands-on workshops.

• Do It Yourself (DIY) Toolkits

  Are you looking to give back, but don't know where to start? Perhaps you don't have the time or resources to give back in the way you want to. Or maybe you have students who want to volunteer but you can't take them off of school grounds for a service related field trip. If this sounds familiar, then you might be a perfect recipient for our DIY Toolkits. We can provide you with helpful instructions on how to do on-site projects at school or in your home. We will also provide you with information on how to collect supplies that you need while also giving you resources that will help engage others in some hands-on service. Giving back can take a lot of planning, but we want to help you get started and complete enjoyable and educational service centered projects that will make a difference.     Pittsburgh Cares Youth Engaged in Service will be offering two rounds of mini-grants to engage youth throughout our region in volunteer and service-learning projects that meet some of our city's most pressing needs. We know that when we put dollars into the hands of motivated young people, teachers, and nonprofit leaders, great things happen! Through our mini-grants program, we plan to make an investment in youth-led solutions for stronger communities.

  • Eligibility & Criteria

    Eligible applicants: Eligible applicants include: students at K-12 public schools, youth service learning coordinators, educators, administrators, youth organizers, schools, non-profit groups, 501(c)3 corporations, and small community groups. Grants may be awarded to individual youth without official 501c3 status, but will require a fiscal agent. Only proposals that take place in Western PA will be considered.

  • Limit one form per volunteer.

  • You MUST register for a one-time calendar project using your unique Pittsburgh Cares account and unique email address.

  • Eligible volunteers must be 15 years of age or older to be eligible.

  • All orders are due one week (5 business days) prior to desired game date.

    No walk-up orders accepted!

  • All tickets will be sent by mail and should arrive prior to the game.

  • REGISTER TO VOLUNTEER for a qualifying project for a total of at least four (4) hours (at one or multiple qualifying projects)

    sometime between March 1, 2014 - June 30, 2014.

  • RECEIVE YOUR VOUCHER once your hours are verified via our website.

    The Pittsburgh Pirates will email you a voucher that you can use to claim your pair of tickets, and indicate your preferred game dates. Complete and return the voucher as instructed.

  • Mayor's Day - Community Cleanup

    Teams of Volunteers will be working in tandem with ServePGH on two "Love your Block" Redd up Zones within walking distance of EECM. Activities include: picking up trash and debris, raking and organic material (leaves and weeds) removal, and general urban beutification.   • Mayor's Day - Community kitchen Lunch Assistance

    Volunteers will be assisting with the daily lunch that is served to clients of the EECM. Volunteers will be wiping down trays, wrapping silverware, and greeting clients as they enter and exit the dining room.
