Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 During Lent, we all need mentors who can guide us down this twisting and arduous 40 day path. Let me suggest that you may have to look to church history to find those mentors. I have been helped immensely by Catherine of Siena as I walk through this holy season of Lent, because she models for us the pathway out of all kinds of temptations Catherine of Siena, or I should say, Saint Siena, lived in the 14th century.…
Why Do Catholics Have a Devotion to Mary?
In our relationship with Mary, she helps give new life to our souls, prays for us, and provides us with what we need to grow in grace. In return, she deserves our honor and love, just as our earthly mothers do. She deserves our devotion.

Limited Devotion: A Non-Deadhead's Guide to the Grateful Dead
Plenty of things make the Grateful Dead a band that should completely disinterest me: The marathon concerts, the unflinchingly loyal (and oft-lampooned) fanbase, that the band's surviving members attempt to keep the dream alive despite the decades-long absences of key players. And let's not start on the noodling. Oh, the noodling. It would appear as though the deck is stacked against any likelihood of my being a 'Deadhead.'

An Empty Devotion: Day 20
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. from generation to generation. he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent…
Devotion Should Increase
“If evils increase, the devotion of the People of God should also increase. And so, venerable brothers, we want you to take the lead in urging and encouraging people to pray ardently to our most merciful mother Mary by saying the Rosary during the month of October.” -St. Paul VI
Excerpted from the Council’s 2019 Lenten Reflection Guide for Lectionary Year C. “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” He also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no …

Lenten Devotional February 20
One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the…
Lenten Devotional March 10
At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you." He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.' In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day-for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!" "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone…
Lenten Reflection February 20
Over the years, on both a personal and professional level, I have found a particular spiritual comfort in the Psalms. Psalm 25: 1-10 reminds us that putting our trust in God provides us with strength and protection throughout our difficult days: “I trust in you; do not let me but put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one who hopes in you will ever be to shame ….” Psalm 25 then continues, offering a centering message so important for…
Lenten Reflection March 20
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find…
Day 10 Devotion
Forty days of nothing? Not hardly. Even though Jesus fasted for forty days, He clearly came out stronger than ever based on the events following it. How is your fast strengthening you? Do you feel like you're floundering? Maybe you're not experiencing the outcomes you expected. Ask God to lead you into the same kind of preparation, power, and purpose that Jesus gained from His time of fasting.
Advent Devotion: Day 20
And, as the angel described this impending miracle to Mary, he confirmed to her that, for God, nothing is impossible! (v. 37) There are many other times in the Bible where we are given the promise that all things are possible with God and nothing is impossible. One of them is in my absolute favorite verse, Philippians 4:13, which says: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I try to keep this in mind when life's troubles come my way…
What Wondrous Love
Scripture: John 3:14-21 What wondrous love is this oh my soul, oh my soul… Have you ever pondered while singing this familiar Lenten song, how one describes God’s love? Do the overused and insufficient words of “super,” “great,” “wonderful,” and “amazing” ring a bit too hollow to describe God’s everlasting love for creation, including you and me(!) Suppose a daughter were to ask her parent to…
How to Save a Soul
Scripture: Mark 8:31-38 Verse 36 has been a part of my life seemingly forever, but this version is not the way it is in my consciousness. For that version, I had to search my home for a King James Bible with the familiar verse “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” In a place where I protect my family memorabilia I found two – my mother’s well-worn and my more pristine…
Devotion: How Much is Enough?
Philippians 4:4-13 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved…
