I was perusing Facebook recently and noticed a friend had tagged me in a post about the now infamous cover of The New Yorker magazine in which four female surgeons are pictured looking down over a patient. By then, the hashtag #ILookLikeASurgeon had gone viral, and I could see why it was so revolutionary. In medical school, when I conducted my general surgery training, female surgeons were few and far between. And in cardiothoracic surgery, the number of female surgeons was zero. Like most surgeons, I am proud to be a surgeon. This is an elite club of men and women who went through the “boot camp” of residency, who sacrificed so many aspects of their lives to help people.
