TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- Some of you probably get your recycling picked up at the curb. Or maybe you take it to a drop off spot. But right now, the U. S. is facing an ongoing recycling crisis, and the Tri-Cities are not immune. Centers across the country are having to send their recycling straight to the dump. Sitting in a stack at Clayton Ward Recycling in Kennewick, you can find a squished carton of eggs, an empty beer can, and an old box…
We understand that “stuff” accumulates. As we settle into homes, raise families, start businesses and live our lives, the things we keep have a way of piling up. Sometimes we need to get rid of extra stuff and, thanks in large part to Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District , residents of West Chester Township have access to free recycling year-round for certain items. Recycling…
A quick, fun flashcard to test your recycling and sustainability knowledge.
Header design by Maxwell Tielman with with floral graphics by Mia Charro . When I was an undergrad at Pratt Institute, I took an introductory course in the history of interior design. Toward the end of the semester, when discussions about postwar excess gave way to the earth-conscious counter movements of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, my professor screened a short video entitled The Story of Stuff . Essentially a critique of the unsustainable western lifestyle, The Story of Stuff tells, as it…
Chittenden Solid Waste District presented some ways residents can keep their holiday spirit out of the landfill this year. Choose live, local Christmas trees The average artificial tree lasts six to nine years, but will remain in a landfill for centuries. Recycling has gone way up during the coronavirus pandemic, A new survey by Republic Services, which hauls trash and recyclables in Clark County, found that 65 percent of those surveyed said spending more time at home has made them more aware of their impact on the environment, and 33 percent are sorting recyclables more. Jeremy Walters is the community relations manager for Republic Services. He believes recycling has gone up because people now have an idea of just how much trash they throw…
Living on the Real World (With apologies to – and continuing admiration for – The New Yorker, which for decades had a column by this name.) While our backs have been turned, social scientists have been working on cool stuff. A sample, in no particular order, and making no claims for comprehensiveness, or timeliness for that matter – there’s a lot more out there, and most of my reading is remedial. Many cities around the country will celebrate the 47th Earth Day on…
One of the more challenging aspects of adapting to your new hearing aids is the batteries that power them. Not only are they small and easily lost, but they also need to be changed routinely. How long they actually work will depend on the size of the battery, the power level of your hearing aids and if you are using wireless features. On average, a small size 10 battery will last three to five days; a size 312 for seven to 10 days…
