We often interact with men and women we may not be aware have been instrumental in serving our country. As we continue our Year of the Veteran coverage, I want to introduce you to two doctors who started their medical careers serving in the military.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center honored the first patient ever admitted to the hospital when it opened its doors in 1953. Edward Danquer, of Nedrow, was the first patient to enter the Medical Center on June 10th, 1953. Danquer, a paratrooper, was severely wounded by a landmine while serving in the Army in Korea. He spent almost three years recovering in Japan and Walter Reed Hospital before coming back home to Central New York and the Syracuse VA Medical Center.
